To answer frequent questions on how to open DJVU files, I would like to post this article here.

DjVu is a graphic format optimized for storing scanned documents. In particular, it is ideal for creating electronic books. There are two traditional methods of storing scanned books. For enthusiasts, this is optical character recognition (OCR) with consequent transformation into an electronic text document. People with less patience upload the “scans” themselves, that is, scanned images, often bundled into pdf documents. The first method requires loads of work, while the second one results in files weighing tens and even hundreds of megabytes.

A compromise method has now been developed. It is the transformation of scanned images into DjVu format. In this format, text and sharp images are stored with 300 dpi resolution, while all the rest is considered to be background and is stored with decreased resolution. This allows for compressing electronic documents without decreasing their readability. A scanned book in DjVu file format will only take several megabytes, which is quite acceptable.
